ARIEL dealcoholized wines are made predominantly from fruit that was sustainably farmed in J. Lohr’s estate vineyards and are produced in J. Lohr’s state-of-the-art sustainable wineries. J. Lohr Vineyards & Wines, which recently received its distinction as a California Certified Sustainable Winegrower (CCSW), has adopted a set of industry best sustainable practices in its vineyards and winemaking facilities. The company’s heart-felt commitment to nurture and protect the environment is also reflected in each bottle of ARIEL dealcoholized wine.

Some of these sustainable practices include:

Solar Power: ARIEL wines are made in J. Lohr’s solar-powered Paso Robles winery. Unveiled in 2009, the three-acre photovoltaic solar tracking array on site is the largest of its kind in the American wine industry, providing over 90% of the winery’s annual energy. The winery also uses efficient, motion-sensitive lighting.

Water Conservation: In the vineyards, water use is budgeted using weather station data, soil moisture sensors and pressure bombs. Due to this water conservation program, approximately one million gallons of water have been conserved since 2004!

Composting: After production, all remaining seeds, stems and skins are composted to be used as natural fertilizers.

Reducing Chemical Use: Vineyards are hand-weeded to reduce the use of herbicides. To limit pesticide use and improve ecosystem balance, owl boxes have been built in the vineyards to house birds of prey, which naturally protect the vines from vertebrate pests.

Materials: Environmentally friendly solutions are used to clean our tanks, and our packaging and printed materials are made of biodegradable inks and recycled papers.

Human Resources: Mobile shade structures provide vineyard workers with cool, protected rest areas.

Air Quality: Farms are designed to minimize the amount of equipment passing through the vineyards, and electrical power and alternative fuels are used wherever possible.

Neighbors and Community: J. Lohr Vineyards & Wines and ARIEL Vineyards support numerous worthy organizations that focus on the health and well-being of children and families and the advancement of the arts.
